I Call You Friend: Four Women's Stories of Race, Faith, and Friendship
Published in Paperback by Broadman & Holman Publishers (January, 1999)
Average review score:

A Worlderful Story of Faith and CourageI call you friend challanged me to think more deeply about how we treat others. The stroies gave me insite into some of the subtilies of discrimination which hurt others.
Blazing a trail for racial reconciliation through story.Elvon Reed-Borst, one of the women telling her story in this book, wrote the following in a journal she kept as a young girl. It sums up what I feel this book conveys. She wrote, "Some people go down a worn path; I will go where there is no path and I will leave a trail." Echoes of Robert Frost. Elvon, Pamela Toussaint, Jo Kadlecek and Andrea Clark have chosen the "road less travelled on..." Without melodrama, overly subjective confession or sentimentalism, each women opens a dialogue with the reader regarding issues such as: racial reconciliation, growing up in Urban America, Suburban America, the South and the North and the community of faith. The book is so engaging because of the way it is set-up. It is split into three stages of their lives, called: Coming Up, Coming of Age and Coming Together. This structure allows the reader to view each woman's story as if viewing a play in which the stage is sectioned off in fours. Each voice is distinct and individual yet their stories overlap as we watch them meet each other in various ways. Not unlike the four gospel writers (if I may be so bold in such comparison)they describe the same events from their individual viewpoints and in the process we get to know them, Christianity and the racial issue in a more intimate and well-rounded manner. We see the issues raised through female dialogue and three-dimensional story . We also understand what Christ meant when he said, "I call you friend..." because the lives of these women, their mutual admiration, honesty, passion and faith reaffirms for anyone who has ears to hear that laying down one's life in whatever form that works out to be, is simply the natural state of what true Christianity is all about. This is a must read for anyone, no matter where you stand in regard to Christianity, but more so because it re-challenges us all on the issue of racial reconciliation. What are you and I doing about it in our friendships? This book is a map showing us to the trail which Elvon, Pam, Jo and Andrea have and continue to blaze for us to follow.
by Kristy Johnson
These stores will open your eyesThe authors are to be congratulated for being so transparent--this is the hardest topic to be honest about and their honesty really opened my heart and my mind on the issue of race. Read this book and weep and gasp and be changed.

Inspiration Odyssey: A Journey of Self-Expression in Quilts
Published in Paperback by That Patchwork Place (September, 1996)
Average review score:

Incredible and InspirationalAfter reading through this book, I look at the world in a whole new way. Everything is a possible quilt design, now! Diana is an inspiration to beginners like myself - her exercises and techniques are REAL. I use them daily!
WOW! What a great book of design ideas. This book is filled with fantastic ideas for creating and designing non traditional quilts.
The title doesn't lie - truly an inspiring book! This book is the "must have" for quilters looking to break out of the traditional mold. Many books by artists rely on a knowledge of art that few of us who are not artists have, and show page after page of beautiful creations with only vague references to technique and inspiration. Inspiration Odyssey, on the other hand, tells us not only where to find inspiration, but what to do with it once it's been found! Not just another project book, this book provides insight into the mind of the artist - where she gets her inspirations, how she interprets them, how she documents, evolves, and executes a design, and some of the final products.
This is an artist's book for the non-artist. Finally, a book that gives some direction around the creative process! This is the first quilting book that I have been eager to read cover to cover - in fact, I can't put it down, and keep returning to its pages for new inspirations. A definite 10!

Jim's Courthouse - A Historical Novel
Published in Paperback by PublishAmerica, Inc. (20 March, 2001)
Average review score:

Jim's CourthouseI enjoyed this novel from the beginning to the end. You are invited to witness a twisted love affair between three people. You'll learn that a man who loves two women is a man in trouble. Be sure to check out this novel and find out how Jim's life unfolds. Can true love survive? Jo Ella has a gift that I hope she continues to use. She can weave a tale that traps your imagination and makes you feel for her characters. I'm looking foward to more of her tales.
Fascinating novelA marvelous and fascinating story that keeps the reader absorbed on every page. It reveals the humanity and struggles of Southern life during the Civil War era. Ms White involves the reader emotionally in this compelling story of love and the hardships of war. White is a wonderful storyteller that touches the heart. Her discriptions are so vivid that I felt I was living with her characters. A wonderful addition to one's library.
Jim's CourthouseJim's Courthouse written by JoElla White is a compelling story set in the Civil War days in upper South Carolina. Ms. White's depiction of the rural country side, events and characters makes for one of the best books I have read. This book is well written and although described as a "romantic" novel, it still lets the reader draw conclusions and encourages the readers imagination! Ms. White has done an outstanding job of joining fact and fiction. Jim's Courthouse is one book that you will not want to put down until the final page. I highly recommend you read this one, you will not be disappointed.

John Ozoga's Whitetail Intrigue: Scientiific Insights for White-Tailed Deer Hunters
Published in Hardcover by Krause Publications (May, 2000)
Average review score:

We Need More Northern Whitetail BooksAs a northern deer hunter I am delighted with this book. Most of the whitetail deer books out there (at least the managment ones) are based in the south. Ozaga's book rings home with this Michigan guy.
The book is packed with great info on northern deer behavior. The photos are good and the research is sound. I wish there were more out there like it. So far, next to Alsheimer's deer books this is my favorite. I also just found a great northern food plot and habitat book called "Grow 'Em Right" by Dougherty and Dougherty which is right on the money up here in cold country.

An Excellent Choice For Any Deer HunterIt is not often that one encounters a book that answers long standing questions, especially those that arise from the contradictions found in the popular deer hunting press. There is nothing Gee Whiz about Mr. Ozoga, he tells it like he sees it. When he doesn't know he tells you that too. This book is based on 30 years observation and experimentation on white tails at the Cusino Wildlife Research Station and dispels many of the myths and folklore regarding deer.
Be aware, however, that this book is not easy reading, but seems to be based on the discussion and conclusion sections of his research papers. It is approachable and yields to the diligent reader. It is well worth the effort and the price.
I agree wholeheartedly with Mr. Barton's review.
John Ozoga Whitetail IntrigueI have been studying and hunting Whitetail deer for over 30 years and this book actually contains useful information. Too many times books of this sort are centered on some gimmick to kill the big one. This is not the case with Ozoga's work, you will come away with a deeper understanding of the deer's habits, social order and habitat requirements. Especially for the northern deer herd. For anyone who has an interest in Whitetails this is a must read.

The Kayaker's Playbook!
Published in Paperback by Performance Video & Instruction Inc (April, 1998)
Average review score:

Along with Bombproof & Nealy's book, one of the best!I've been kayaking whitewater for about 5 years, seriously the past 2 seasons. I stumbled on this while on a visit back to the States last summer. It is clear and concise and builds on a series of simple paddling and 'awareness' excercises - as if a gifted 'professor' collected his/her lecture notes. No kayaker should be without this book, even if you're a pro, there's bound to be some thought-provoking new material here for you or a new spin on how to pass on techniques to newbies. Nealy's book ('Kayak') opens your eyes about 'reading' water and routefinding, this book opens your eyes about boat control. It's a gift, worth 3X the price...
This is a fine resource for both paddlers and instructorsOn the cover of this book there's a picture of what appears to be a gnome with an atomic grin sitting in a kayak. The picture is the clue to both the book's underlying philosophy and its explicit message: kayaking on white water is fun. And the best way to have the most fun is to get the basics right. The book is unique in that it consists of nothing more than a series of well illustrated drills which are aimed at developing good boat control, and good paddle technique, so the next time you get on a white water river you can do whatever you want to do better. It's not aimed at wanna be rodeo stars. Text is kept to a minimum and the book is remarkably uncluttered and direct. Unless you're a champion slalom paddler there's lots here that is useful to help you refine and improve your technique and you don't have to wait til your next white water trip to get on with it. If you want to improve your paddling, buy this book. The authors offer a money back guarantee that it will improve your skills. If you've got a frend who's just started paddling, buy them this book. (And read it yerself!) If you're an instructor, especially a new one, buy this book. It's a ready made repetoire of drills and activities you can use to help your students improve facets of their paddling. For instructors it's also good on the little differences between the way racers and recreational boaters do things. Which given the authors' backgrounds is hardly suprising. (You might want to deduct half a star from the rating if you don't like yo-dude-speak)
Great resource for a training programAs soon as I found the laminated exercise card in the back of the book, I knew that this was much more than a book to be read. It was written in such a way that the info inside could go with me in the boat! The B & W photos are more than adequate for the purpose and Kent Ford never writes DOWN to the reader, World Champ though he is...A great resource and confidence builder

Kayaking on the Edge
Published in Paperback by Menasha Ridge Press (01 December, 1999)
Average review score:

Terrific teacherThis is a great book. Ben Solomon has a knack for explaining the most complicated moves. He is a masterful teacher.
This Book Rocks!Ben Solomon has the unique ability to turn a technical manual into a literary tour de force. A must read for anyone looking to take the next step in their development as a paddler.
A great book from a great kayakerThis book is great! The concepts that the author, Ben Solomon teaches are well illustrated, easy to understand, and will greatly increase your confidence on the river. His writing style is informative and humorous at the same time. Ben successfully communicates some of the more difficult concepts of whitewater paddling - all the while keeping the book fun to read and hard to put down. Whether you're interested in playboating, river running or both - I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone wanting to improve their whitewater kayaking skills.

Pick it up you can't put it downThis is a question and awnser book that is eazy to read and awnsers questions that every deer hunter has asked him self a dozen times before. This would be a good book for kids to read. When it comes to deer Leonard Lee Rue is my guru.Great book Leonard !
Questions I would not think to askExcellent Q and A on the Whitetail and other wild life.A must for those who appreciate the wild.
Great book for the beginner and the experienced hunter. This book is a question and answer book. The entire book is full questions about the whitetail deer. Leonard usually has data to support his answers to the questions in his book. He also gives other people credit when he uses an answer that he learned from their studies. This is a great book for either beginners or experienced hunters. I have been hunting for 14 years and I learned a lot of things from this book.
